D7 (PASSIVE INCOME ) VISA

"NO INVESMENT" RESIDENCY

For those looking and/or able to move to Portugal as residents, the D7 visa (also known as the Passive Income visa) is probably the best option. There is NO INVESTMENT needed and you receive the same benefits as that of the Golden Visa, with the same path to apply for Portuguese Nationality after 5 years.

D7 VISA V/S GOLDEN VISA

The two key differences between the Portugal D7 Visa and the Portugal Golden Visa are:

1.    The Golden Visa requires the applicant to make an investment from €500,000 (or donation of €250,000) in Portugal before applying. The D7 visa has no such investment requirement, but requires the applicant to demonstrate proof of a regular (passive) income of at least €9,840 per year.

2.    Both, Golden Visa holders as well as D7 Visa holders can live and work in Portugal. However, Golden Visa holders are only required to spend a minimum of 14 days every 2 years in Portugal and can choose to live elsewhere the rest of the time. D7 visa holders, on the other hand, must live in Portugal for at least 16 months in the first 2 years.

Clearly a D7 visa is only suitable for people who are willing to become tax residents of Portugal and spend the bulk of their time here. With those key differences out of the way, let us understand the D7 Visa and its application process better.

REQUIREMENTS

The D7 visa was originally targeted at retired persons who had a source of steady income like a pension. However, as long as you have a stable income from any source like property (rent), investments (interest, dividends), or even business income which you can earn remotely while in Portugal from a job/business outside Portugal, you can qualify to apply for the D7 Visa.

  • The applicant must be a citizen of a Non-EU country.

  • The applicants must have a minimum passive income in home country equivalent to €9,840.

    • To add a spouse/dependent parent to the application, add 50% to the minimum passive income

    • For each dependent child/sibling, add 30% to the minimum passive income

  • Deposit at least one year's equivalent minimum income in your Portuguese Bank Account.

  • Demonstrate that all applicants hold no criminal record.

  • Proof of accommodation in Portugal (owned or rented)

  • Each applicant must live in Portugal for at least 16 months every 2 years.
